Recycled TEAK

Where does our teak come from?

Our DRIFT, FAMILY and ROMA collections are exclusively made out of recovered teak. Indonesian houses were traditionally made of teak, which is the local hard wood. It is solid, naturally resistant to humidity and earthquakes that are quite frequent in this region. It is used everywhere : framework, windows and doors frames, floors and partitions... or rather WAS used everywhere.

The rising Indonesian middle class does not want to build traditional houses anymore. They want (and developers too) some kind of "modernity" and it comes with concrete, tiling and air con. Thousands and thousands of old local architecture houses were destroyed.

Luckily, the material is not lost. Indonesians used this very strong, solid and already cut wood that just laid there when the lack of "fresh" teak (from plantation) arose. A new industry of recovering and transforming this wood was born. They collect, sort, take off the nails, strip and cut all the wood that once was a door frame, beam or floorboard. The quality of the teak is so high, that its value often exceeds the plantations ones.

This is the teak KOK Maison uses for its furniture. A teck that tells a story, that does not come from deforestation and gives jobs to numerous people... but also a teak that might have so flaws or irregularities. We actually find that these irregularities are quite appealing, so we emphasize on it by brushing the teak.

Maintenance of untreated natural teak furniture

Our recycled teak is not treated and unfinished. It has not undergone any protective treatment other than a light water-based dye to uniform the different colors of teak.

It is permeableAny liquid (wine, soda, etc.) or viscous material (fat, sauce, etc.) will leave a mark in the wood. To reduce the porosity of wood, we advise you to apply our waterproof spray regularly : it just gives you time to wipe the liquid.

Table basse en teck KOK MAISONFor daily maintenance: clean furniture with a slightly damp cloth. In case of small stains, Marseille soap remains the most effective maintenance product. To eliminate a persistent stain (wine, grease), gently sand with fine sandpaper in the direction of the wood thread.
In the case of difficult-to-remove marks, bleach renovate the wood effectively but will tend to lighten it. Rinse thoroughly after application and let dry.

Bureau en teck KOK MAISONIt is strongly not advised to apply varnish, wax or coating. Recycled teak can sometimes come from a red-tinged species or a rather yellow variety. Any chemical will bring out these different shades and your furniture will no longer have a uniform color.Commode en teck KOK MAISON

Cracks and fading are almost inevitable. Solid teak comes from hot and humid countries. In our latitudes, where the air is often much drier, wood is still alive. To minimize this phenomenon, keep constant and medium humidity and heat in the room where the furniture is located.
