Rattan head-board Arcachon: the grey kooboo, kesako?
The Arcachon rattan headboard is made of "grey kooboo" rattan. The "kooboo" rattan variety is a fast-growing species from the island of Borneo. There are in fact over 300 varieties of rattan in the world, each with its own characteristics. Kooboo only reaches a maximum diameter of 10 or 12 mm when mature. It is not rigid enough to be used as a structural stick to make an armchair, for example, but it does have a nice suppleness and regular bark, which is particularly appreciated for weaving work (basketry or furniture upholstery). Just what we needed to weave the panel of the Arcachon rattan headboard. The kooboo is eggshell coloured in its natural state. The beautiful grey colour of the Arcachon rattan headboard is obtained by soaking the rattan sticks in water and air-drying them before weaving.
The Arcachon rattan headboard in use
The Arcachon rattan headboard can be dusted with a damp cloth, a brush or a feather duster. In the event of heavy soiling, it can be brushed and rinsed with water in exceptional cases, taking care to remove the velcro-fastened rear protective cover. The Arcachon rattan headboard is not afraid of the humidity of country houses in winter, or conversely of dry environments in summer, but under no circumstances, as with all rattan furniture, should it be placed outside (in tree houses for example, which are too cold in winter).
