Rattan pith, splint, cane: what are the differences?

The Nantucket rattan coffee table is made from several rattan byproducts: cane, rattan pith, and rattan splint. To put it simply, consider that the rattan cane—the rattan stalk with its bark, used to build the table’s structure—can then be peeled to remove the bark. Once calibrated and sorted, these highly durable and flexible “strips” of bark are used to make bindings. This is what is known as rattan “splints.” The rattan cane, stripped of its bark, can then be fed through a drawing machine to produce uniform cylindrical strands that will be used to weave the tabletop and the lower magazine rack of the Nantucket rattan coffee table. This is known as rattan “pith.” Since cane, splints, and pith are natural materials, it is normal to see color variations—sometimes quite pronounced—from one strand to another, which are part of the material’s charm.
