Rattan pith, splint, cane: what are the differences?
The Nantucket honey-coloured square rattan coffee table is made from several rattan by-products: cane, rattan pith and rattan splints. To put it simply, let's consider that the cane, the rattan stem with its bark, which is used to build the structure of the table, can then be peeled to remove the bark. Once calibrated and sorted, these very strong and flexible "laces" of bark will be used to make ligatures. This is what is called rattan "splints". The rattan cane without its bark can then be pushed through a drawing machine to produce regular cylindrical strands that will be used to weave the top of the tabletop and the lower magazine rack of the Nantucket honey-coloured square rattan coffee table. This is called rattan "pith". As cane, splints and pith are natural materials, it is normal to see slight variations in colour from one strand to another, which are part of the charm of the material.
