Taken from our "studio reserve", this patinated bamboo umbrella stand is a unique piece, brought back from China many years ago. It is a remarkable piece of basketry, typical of the Chinese tradition of bamboo craftsmanship: the shaft is made of strips of debarked bamboo woven in a herringbone pattern, lined with remarkable ornamental work in bamboo bark strips. As the bark takes the dye less well than the fibre itself, the craftsman has skilfully exploited this difference to create this superb monochrome brown effect.
