The Brigitte rattan armchair in just a few words

An icon of the 60s, the Brigitte rattan armchair is part of the large family of so-called “coquille” or "shell" rattan armchairs, because of their round shape. They have been manufactured in all sizes, finishes and qualities. The "Brigitte" is a little bigger than the original KOK from the 60s, a small departure from our policy of identical reissue, but people’s stature and expectations in terms of comfort have changed a little since then...

A little bit of history

The "Coquille" rattan chair is a generic model for any self-respecting "rattan" piece. This silhouette, which seems quite simple, is by no means easy to assemble. A lot of know-how and a minimum of equipment (steel moulds) are necessary to overcome the main difficulty: the perfect circle, otherwise the whole chair will be wobbly. It is no coincidence that the idea of combining two rattan circles to make a chair was born in the Netherlands after the war. Coming from Indonesia, a Dutch colony at the time, the rattan entered Europe via Rotterdam, and was processed, in particular, in Noordwolde, a small town in Friesland, which had made a name for itself in rattan furniture, and whose know-how was recognised throughout Europe. It is no coincidence either that KOK was the number one manufacturer of the shell chair in France in the 60s and 70s, Pieter KOK being, before he moved to Halluin, himself from... Noordwolde!

Features and options

Frame in natural unpeeled rattan, bound with split rattan, 4 plastic pads, one on each foot.

Overall dimensions: height 81 cm x width 70 cm x depth 79 cm, seat height 43 cm, seat width 51 cm, seat depth 45 cm. Delivered assembled, non-stackable, weight 4.5 kg. Indonesian manufacture.

The Brigitte armchair comes in a child-size and in an XXL loveseat version. A matching cushion, available in three colours, can be ordered as an option.
